In 2003 the communities encompassed within the boundaries of the Municipal District of Smoky River (the MD, Girouxville, Falher, and Donnelly) signed an agreement to work together as a region in terms of economic development. The board of directors has 11 board members, including an elected official from each municipality, three members at large from the Municipal District of Smoky River, 1 member at large from the Town of Falher, and one youth member.
Smoky River Regional Economic Development is the driving force behind the development and sustainment of quality businesses and employment opportunities in the Smoky River Region. Its mission is to provide progressive business-oriented leadership, fostering industry and government partnerships and advocating for advanced education opportunities to assist in the growth of the business community.
The Smoky River Region provides an excellent opportunity to build and grow businesses of all sizes. With access to a variety of transportation methods, access to water, thousands of acres of farmland, and five supportive municipalities, the region is the perfect place to start a value-added company or agricultural business.
The population of the Smoky River Region is 4,492. That increases to 23,316 when you go to a 100km radius. Also, with the same 100km radius, the cultivated acres grow to 1,491,575 acres, making Municipal District of Smoky River the agriculture hub of the region.
